Uncle Wilbur

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO | 2000

The intent of this project was to introduce a work of public, interactive art into a downtown park in need of renewed public ownership and use. This location is the only remaining “pocket park” in the downtown care of Colorado Springs, and its health is vital to the success of surrounding businesses as well as the continued growth of downtown nightlife.

This is the only known fountain of its kind, the hydraulically operated figure of Uncle Wilber emerges from the mosaic pedestal under a blue umbrella-shaped form. As the sculpture rises, it begins to move and spout water. The surrounding concrete pavement serves as a play area for children of all ages who can dance with the tuba playing Uncle Wilber once per hour.
